Jews in Belgium

The southern part of the Low Countries, today Belgium, was a Habsburg territory. First it was the Spanish Netherlands and then the Austrian Netherlands.

Before there was a Jewish community in Amsterdam, there was a community of New Christian merchants in Antwerp. This community in Antwerp was the critical stepping stone between Portugal and the Sephardic Jewish diaspora.
