The port of Malacca controlled the sea route between India and China. Portuguese troops from Goa conquered Muslim Sultanate of Malacca in 1611. Unfortunately for them, the Ming Chinese government responded aggressively towards the defeat of their ally, torturing and executing Portuguese in China and boycotting Portuguese trade. The Dutch, assisted by local allies, captured the city from Portugal in 1641.
