Mozambique

Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer, rounded the Cape of Good Hope in 1498 and soon came to the island of Mozambique from which the modern country gets its name. The island was named after an Arab trader, Musa al Big. Possibly the island was an Arab slave trading base. The Portuguese established a base here, and it became a stop on the route to India. In 1558 they started building Fort São Sebastião. The settlement traded people as slaves, spices and gold.

There is no Portuguese Inquisition case that I can find that references judaising in Mozambique.

The Lemba people in southern Africa have a tradition that they are of Jewish origin. DNA testing shows that their patrilineal line is of Jewish origin.

Lemba tradition is that they are descended from seven Jewish men who left Israel 2,500 years ago and married African women. Maybe, but I wonder if there is a connection with New Christian traders in Mozambique. As more people have DNA tests, it will be interesting to see if any Spanish and Portuguese Jews match Lemba men.
